There hasn’t been a noticeable increase in infections in India in the nearly three weeks since health authorities increased their vigilance in response to a significant Covid-19 surge in China. After two weeks of a slight increase, new cases in India saw a slight decline in the week that ended on Sunday, but overall numbers remained incredibly low.
India reported 1,268 new cases this week, down from 1,526 the week before. The number of new cases more than doubled the previous week and has since reported a decrease. The number of cases has stayed within 2,000 for the past six weeks.
Compared to the six Covid deaths the week before, there were 12 Covid deaths nationwide. Since the second week of November, the virus has not caused more than 50 deaths per week.
The state of Kerala continued to register the highest number of cases and deaths, but the case numbers are now falling. 383 cases were found in the state, down from 467 in the previous seven days. This week, Kerala reported seven deaths associated with Covid.
225 new infections were reported in Karnataka, down from 276 the week prior. The state had seen a sharp increase in cases that week (December 26–January 1) from 116 in the previous seven days. Maharashtra reported 132 cases, a decrease from 168 the week prior. The number of cases in Delhi decreased to 48 in the past week from 81.
Since July 2022, when the weekly count peaked at 1.36 lakh, there hasn’t been a significant increase in Covid cases in India.
