On Monday, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred off the far eastern coast of Russia, but no tsunami or immediate casualties or damage were reported, according to Russia’s emergency ministry.
According to the emergency ministry, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 100 km, about 44 km (27 miles) south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Pacific coast of Russia.
Media footage from the Kamchatka peninsula, about 6,800 km east of Moscow, showed some building cracks and supermarket bottles broken after being knocked over by the earthquake. Still, no significant immediate structural damage was evident.
The emergency ministry reported that operational teams of rescuers and firefighters were inspecting buildings. There are no casualties or destruction, according to preliminary information.
The Russian Academy of Sciences Geophysical Survey’s Kamchatka Branch estimated the earthquake’s magnitude at 6.9.
The initial magnitude estimate from the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) was 6.6.
According to the US Tsunami Warning System, no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
