On 2nd July 2019, breach in the Tiwari Dam occurred due to heavy rainfall. This took place in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra around 9:40 p.m. 20 people are missing while 6 people were dead. This massacre washed away near about 12 houses and 20 vehicles located near the dam including villages like Akle, Ovali and Nandivase.
“The district authorities were told about the leakage sign shown by the 19 years old dam. Still no action was taken for repairing Tiwana.”- according to the news agency IANS.
The rescue team consisting of government officials, volunteers and police are present at the site along with the NDRF team (national disaster response force).
They are working from a distance of approximately 274 kilometres from the city to carry out the operation. The rescue team have used drones to locate 6 dead bodies, and over 18 missing people. “We have also deployed two teams after the breach and looking for survivors”- said Aloke Awasthy, spokesman NDRF.
Suresh Prabhu the former union minister tweeted this morning his condolences for all the people who have suffered from this massacre. He had asked the NGO’s and the #karyakartaas to help the victim and arranging rescue operation.
While the opposition party- the congress tweeted their condolences to the families of the victim.”We pray the missing individuals are found immediately and have a speedy recovery”- they added. The congress party have asked the Maharashtra government to take immediate action and not to allow such devastation to continue
The chief minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis told reporters that in the past 12 hours Maharashtra has received an extra ordinary rainfall of 300 to 400 millimetres which is the highest rainfall in the past 10 years. The drainage system which already existed in the city could not cope up with this rainfall. This was accompanied by high tide.
This heavy monsoon has brought maximum part of the city to a standstill. The state received the maximum rainfall in 12 hours of time on 2nd July 2019. Not only Mumbai but such heavy downfall was also experienced by places like Palghar, Raigad district (Nasik and Ratnagiri) and Thane.
About 30 people were killed after the wall collapsed in Mumbai Malad East. The rescue teams led by the Mumbai fire brigade and NDRF made severe attempts to rescue the people trapped. Among them the dead body of a 12 years old girl named Sanchita was recovered after 12 hours of unsuccessful attempt.
Long distance trains were paralyzed due to over flooding of railway lines and stations. However, Suburban services running normally announced by the Western Railways this morning. The chief minister of the state announced a compensation of rupees 5 lacks to the families who lost their near and dear ones and suffered from the wall collapse incident. He also tweeted for their speedy recovery and good health.
