Will India benefit from the latest proposal to end the limit on Green Card?

Indian IT professionals can get bigger gifts from the US government in the days to come. In fact, two identical bill of the same type have been introduced in both Houses of the American Parliament to amend the Green Card (permanent residence card) law. If these bills are passed, then thousands of Indian professionals awaiting permanent citizenship will benefit.

Who introduced the Green Card Bill

Firstly, the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act was introduced by Republic Party MP Mike Lee and Democratic MP Kamla Harris. While presenting the bill, Harris said that we are a country of refugees and our strengths have always been contained in diversity and unity. Another similar bill, Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act (HR 1044) MPs Joe Lofgren and Ken Buck presented in the House of Representatives.

What is in the bill

In this bill, there is a proposal to end the maximum limit on this card according to each country. Now America gives a green card to nearly 1.40 million people every year. However, according to the existing rules, more than 7 percent of the green card cannot be given to people of any of these countries. Due to this rule, people of more populous countries such as China and India have to wait for decades. Obviously, if this Bill was passed in Parliament and law became law then H-1B visa holders will benefit thousands of Indian professionals.

The number of green card holders is still

In October last, a report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was revealed. This report said that the number of green card holders has decreased over the last two years. According to the report, in 2015, 64,116 Indians have been issued a Green Card for valid permanent residence. Whereas 64,687 green cards were issued in 2017 In the year 2017, the US issued the green card to 1,127,167 foreigners, while in 2016, cards were issued to 1,183,505 and 1,051,031 people in 2015.
