Former bureaucrat Amit Khare has been appointed as adviser to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for two years on a contract basis. He retired as higher education secretary last month. 

Mr Khare, a 1985 batch (retired) IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, had retired on September 30. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mr Khare as an adviser to the prime minister, on a contract basis, initially for a period of two years, it said.

Amit Khare played a key role in implementing the new National Education Policy (NEP) and brought in key policy changes. 

Khare, who also served as the information and broadcasting secretary in 2018-19, retired from service in September. He was re-appointed as I&B secretary in April 2020. In December 2019, he was appointed as the higher education secretary 

Apart from his role in the NEP, Khare was also at the forefront of important policy changes like the Academic Bank of Credit and the four-year undergraduate programme, which will be implemented in Delhi University in the next academic session (2022-23).

A BSc (Physics) graduate from St Stephen’s College, Khare holds an MBA degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.
