Australia had earlier in the day tracked down another target in a high-pressure T20 World Cup contest.
After being selected to bat first, New Zealand scored a tough total of 171/4 in their 20 overs. Williamson, the captain, struck a stunning 85 runs in 48 balls to help his team recover from a sluggish start.
In response, the Australian chase got off to a shaky start when pacer Trent Boult dismissed Aaron Finch for five runs.
With eight wickets in hand and seven balls remaining, opener David Warner and Mitchell Marsh continued their expansive stroke play and established the basis for a magnificent and well-calculated chase.
The New Zealand bowlers faded in the second half of the chase, with Glenn Maxwell finishing the match with a flourish. With a signature reverse shot, he blasted the winning runs and guaranteed Australia’s first-ever T20 World Cup victory.
