A US Treasury official has concluded talks with India; Ukraine and the energy crisis have risen to the top of the agenda.

A US Treasury official has returned from India, where he met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, among others, and discussed matters such as energy pricing and Ukraine.

On August 26, Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo met with government officials in New Delhi, including Sitharaman, PK Mishra, Ajay Seth, Vijay Kwatra, and Pankaj Jain, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

At the meeting, Adeyemo discussed how the US and India might collaborate to address shared global concerns like food shortages and high energy prices.

In a recap of the sessions, he stated that halting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was crucial to tackling these challenges. Adeyemo also discussed with counterparts the United States views on reducing energy prices for people and businesses in India, the United States, and worldwide.

He emphasized the importance of well-supplied global energy markets, even as we work with allies like India to develop access to renewable energy sources that will lessen our reliance on fossil fuels over time, according to the readout.

According to the Treasury, during discussions in New Delhi, the Deputy Secretary continued to emphasize the need to deepen the United States and India’s already strong partnership, notably through forums such as the Quad and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. He noted that via these efforts, they could maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific that brings incredible wealth to residents, including initiatives to strengthen supply chain resiliency between trustworthy allies like the United States and India.
