Munawar Faruqui’s Delhi Show Concerns Police; Permission Denied Amid ‘Communal Harmony’ Report.

The Delhi Police’s Licensing Unit has denied permission for stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui’s performance in the national capital on Sunday. The unit received a tip from the central district police that “the show will impair communal cohesion in the neighborhood.”

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) also wrote to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora earlier this week, urging that Faruqui’s event be banned and threatening a protest if it is not.

“On August 28, an artist named Munawar Faruqui will perform in the Kedarnath Stadium in Delhi’s Civic Center.” In his show, this individual mocks Hindu gods and goddesses. As a result, communal tensions have lately flared up in Bhagyanagar. Please cancel this show as soon as possible… Otherwise, members from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal would protest the concert,” according to sources.

The postponement of his play in Delhi comes barely a week after Bengaluru police denied permission for his show ‘Dongri to nowhere,’ which was due to take place in Karnataka’s capital on August 20. According to police, the Bengaluru event was canceled because the organizers did not have secure authorization to host it in the city.

Notably, the Jai Shri Ram Sena, a fringe organization, filed a complaint with Bengaluru Police Commissioner CH Pratap Reddy against the comic and the organizers. In their lawsuit, the organization alleged that Faruqui upset Hindus in his programs by making disrespectful statements about Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. Previously, the comedian was denied permission to appear in the city in November 2021 for the same reasons.
