Liz Truss was appointed as the UK prime minister at a meeting with the queen.

Liz Truss was sworn in as Britain’s new prime minister on Tuesday during an audience with Queen Elizabeth II following Boris Johnson’s resignation.

In an official photograph, the former foreign secretary, 47, was shaking hands with the monarch to accept her offer to form a new government and become the monarch’s 15th prime minister in her 70-year reign.

The symbolic ceremony was held at the sovereign’s remote Balmoral retreat in the Scottish Highlands because the queen, 96, was deemed unfit to return to London due to illness.

“Today, the queen received the right honorable Elizabeth Truss MP in the audience and requested that she form a new administration,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

“On her appointment as Prime Minister, Ms. Truss accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed hands.”

The last time power was handed over at Balmoral was in 1885, when Queen Victoria was on the throne.

Usually, the outgoing and incoming prime ministers meet the queen at Buckingham Palace in central London in quick succession.

Since 1952, when Winston Churchill met the new queen at Heathrow Airport following the death of her father, King George VI, it has only been held once outside of London.

Truss was declared the winner of an internal Conservative Party vote on Monday, following a grueling campaign that began in July.

She is expected to deliver her first speech as Prime Minister outside 10 Downing Street on Tuesday around 4:00 p.m. (1500 GMT), weather permitting.
