British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended his new “Stop the Boats” initiative on Wednesday against migrants who risk their lives crossing the English Channel to enter the UK illegally from neighboring France.
During the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) in the House of Commons, the opposition questioned Rishi Sunak about the viability of the Illegal Migration Bill, which would have seen all people arriving illegally on such “small boats” sent back to their home country or another “safe third country,” whichever was more convenient.
Anyone discovered to have entered the country illegally was also barred from ever reclaiming their British citizenship.
He told MPs, “Stopping the boats is not just my priority; it’s the people’s priority.”
He declared that if you enter this country illegally, you will not be eligible to apply for asylum.
Opposition Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer countered that the government’s proposals were just “more talk, more gimmicks, more promises to be broken.” Sunak disagreed, saying that while Labour lacks a plan because it does not want to address the issue, he has a clear strategy to prevent people from arriving in the first place.
“People must be aware that if they enter the country illegally, they will be immediately detained and removed. Once this occurs, which they are aware will do, they won’t come, and the boats will stop “Sunak said.
“Those who enter the country illegally will be detained before being sent back home, if it is safe to do so, or to a safe third country like Rwanda, within a few weeks. Your entry into our nation will always be prohibited after removal, just like it is in America and Australia. This is how we will undermine the people smugglers’ business model and regain control of our borders “said he.
