Militants killed a Kashmiri Pandit and injured another group member in an orchard in south Kashmir’s Shopian on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the Valley’s minority community. According to a Valley-based Pandit organization, the entire Kashmiri population now feels endangered.
According to authorities, unidentified militants opened fire on the two Pandit men while working in their apple orchard in the Chotipora district of Shopian. Sunil Kumar died on the scene after being shot from close range. Pitambar Nath Pandit, the other victim, was injured in the incident and was sent to the Army hospital in Srinagar.
The police claimed the terror event took place around 11.30 p.m.
“Two civilians, Pitambar Nath Bhat, son of Arjun Nath Bhat, and Sunil Kumar Bhat, son of Sri Ji Bhat, both residents of Chotigam Shopian and members of the minority group, were critically injured by gunshots.”
Bhat died as a result of his injuries.
“However, the other injured person’s condition is stable,” police said.
The family members are in shock and are struggling to come to terms with what has happened. They demanded justice as the victim’s body was handed over to them. They had returned to the Kashmir Valley in the 1990s when most of the community had decided to flee due to rampant violence.
This is the second time militants have targeted Kashmiri Pandits this year in Shopian’s Chotipora. Sonu Kumar, a Pandit merchant, was shot and injured in his business in April.
