The train number-74643 was coming from Jalandhar to Amritsar when the accident happened on the widened gate. At least 300 people present on the spot were enjoying the Ravana combustion in a field near the tracks. Regarding the incident, Amritsar’s first sub-divisional magistrate Rajesh Sharma said that 50 bodies have been recovered and at least 50 injured have been admitted to a government hospital.
GM of North Railway told NDTV that this accident happened due to the train coming on both tracks. They told that the train arrived on the first track and people went on the second track, but on the other side the train came and people did not even get the chance to escape.
Some eyewitnesses said that the arrival of the train was not known as there was a lot of noise during the Ravana combustion, so the sound of the train was not heard. Some people also said that the driver of the train did not even play the horn.
A local man added that even after a lot of appeal to the Officials and local leaders about the railway issue during Dussehra that the speed of the trains should be kept at the minimum during it crosses the gate, there were no ears lent for the issue. Another person said that due to the noise of firecrackers, people could not hear the sound of the train coming. After this incident, the wave of grief spread across the country. President Ramnath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed grief at the death of the people.
