The Supreme Court will decide who gets the Shiv Sena name and symbol, Sanjay Raut, leader of the Uddhav Thackeray faction, told NDTV today on the eve of a critical Supreme Court hearing on the Sena split.
Mr. Raut also claimed a 2000 crore deal was struck to “buy” the Sena name and symbol. The scheme was devised to capture the Brihanmumbai Corporation, the country’s richest civic body, in the upcoming municipal elections.
On Friday, the Election Commission settled the months-long battle for the Sena name and symbol in favor of the faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Mr. Thackeray has appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, requesting an expedited hearing. However, the court asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi to “Come tomorrow through a proper process.”
Mr. Raut stated that the top court makes the final decision.
“The Supreme Court will make a decision on this, and the SC has said that the Election Commission should not make a decision because the matter is pending,” Mr. Raut told NDTV in an exclusive interview.
