C.N. RAO is the first Indian and first Asian to win the honour of receiving Von Hippel Award of 2017. He is Eminent Scientist and Bharat Ratna achiever non-other than Prof C.N.Rao being a selected candidate for the highest international prize in material research. He is also world’s foremost solid and materials chemists, worked mainly in solid-state and structural chemistry and also recognized the first scientist to reach the h-index of 100.
This year in November at Boston Rao will be presented the award for his interdisciplinary contribution to the development of novel functional materials, including nano materials, graphene, superconductivity, 2D materials and colossal magneto resistance. C.N.rao ( Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao) is also honorary president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru and a former Chair of the Japan-India Science Council. He has authored of around 1600 research papers and also authored and edited 45 books.he is elected member in almost all scientific academies across the globe and even served as chair o the Scientific Advisory Council to PM of India. C.N.Rao is awarded highest civilian award Bharat Ratana along with Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in 2014. He is bestowed with around 70 honorary doctorates and also has received the highest civilian award from several nations of the world.
Von Hippel Award is named after Arthur von Hippel (198-2003) a pioneer scientist knew of dielectrics, semiconductors, ferromagnetics and ferroelectrics. This Von Hippel awardhave been instituted by Materials Research Society (MRS) an organisation with members spanning over 90 countries. These awards include $1000cash prize Honorary membership in MRS, a Unique Trophy, amounted ruby laser crystal symbolizing the many-faceted nature of materials research and also awards are presented to those who recognize quality prized by material scientist and engineer. Whose brilliance and originality of intellect, combined with the vision who crosses boundaries of conventional scientific disciplines.
Rao is also Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, The Royal Society, London and foreign Associate, National Academy of Sciences, USA and founding Fellow and Third World Academy of Sciences among others. Important Positions in National and International Bodies include Chairman, Science Advisory Council to the Prime minister, Immediate Past President, The Academy of Sciences for the developing world(TWAS), Trieste, chairman, National Nano Initiative, Government of India and Member, Atomic Energy Commission of India. Rao has also served as Member, planning commission, the government of India and chairman and director of Reserve Bank of India.
