California DMV just got an extension for issuing the Real ID

The confusion surrounding the Real ID has now been sorted out. Previously it was thought that the last date for flying without using this new identification feature was pushed to January 22nd. But thankfully, even amidst the government shutdown, the California DMV had just got a Thumbs-Up from the Department of Homeland Security for the extension till April 1, 2019.

What is Real ID?

Real ID is a federally approved identification which would allow the millions of Californians to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings. Since the old Californian driving licenses are archaic, the Real ID with enhanced security features is set to be implemented. According to the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, Californians have till April 1, 2019, to update their driving licenses with Real ID. Till that they are allowed to use their old driving licenses for boarding flights.

If this extension had not been given to the DMV, then the people who aren’t having the Real ID would require a passport to board a flight or enter a federal building.

To apply for the Real IDs people are required to walk into the nearest DMV and apply with necessary proofs such as U.S. birth certificate or permanent resident card along with proof of residences such as rental agreement or bill and social security number. Without any further adieu, it is advised to apply for the Real IDs as soon as possible to prevent yourselves from any sort of hindrance in the government services.
