Covid 19 cases are from Kerala up to 32% to 8 weeks high

In the week end on Sunday, the sharp rise in Covid-19 infections in Kerala post-onam led India to an eighth week zoom, with only 66 percent of the total number of cases in the South.

In the past seven days the number of cases in India recorded over 2.9 lakh of fresh Covid in the week (23–29 August), 32 per cent jumped from tally. It was the highest weekly infection since 3.05 Lakh cases were recorded from the 28th of June to the 4th week of July.

Kerala alone reported a massive increase of nearly 1.25 lakh in 1.9 lakh cases, up by 55% from last week. This was the most reported infection in the state in 14 weeks from 16–23 May and the highest infected infection in any India in 13 weeks.

No single state has represented two-thirds of all Covid cases within a week since the early days of the pandemic. The fact that Kerala appears to be in its own league now seems to be based on the absence, this week, of any significant increase in the number of Kerala’s neighbours, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Maharashtra, which recorded a marginal increase of less than 1%, is the only other major state where Covid weekly numeros seem to have risen.

Kerala was also the second state to record more than 4 million (40 lakh) coronavirus cases in the country following Maharashtra up to now. On Sunday the state registered 29 836 new cases, Kerala crossed a grim milestone. The total caseload of Maharashtra is over sixty-five lakhs.

During the week, India recorded a 10.5 percent increase in viral deaths. In the period compared to 3,111 in the last week 3,439 fatalities occurred.

India has now logged over 40,000 cases per day for the fifth straight day, with a score of 43,399 Sunday (with Jharkhand figures yet to arrive). 373 people died during the day and around 7,000 were active incidents up to close to 3.8 lakh.
