As Cyclone Sitrang battered parts of Bangladesh on Monday, at least seven people were killed, including three members of a family, when a brick railing and trees collapsed, according to media reports.
Following the casualties, the Fire Service and Civil Defence established a monitoring cell. According to bdnews24, the incidents occurred in Dhaka, Nagalkot in Cumilla Daulatkhan, Charfesson in Bhola, and Lohagara in Narail as a severe storm lashed Bangladesh with heavy rains and damaging wind.
Thousands of people and livestock were evacuated from Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar coast and moved to cyclone shelters on Monday due to inclement weather caused by Cyclone Sitrang, according to media reports.
As cyclone Sitrang approaches Bangladesh, at least 28,155 people and 2,736 cattle have been evacuated from the Cox’s Bazar coast and relocated to cyclone shelters as of 6 p.m. on Monday, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
“Nearby educational institutions have also been kept ready to use as shelters if required,” said Mamunur Rashid, Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar. “People are being evacuated to shelters to protect lives and property,” he added.
For assistance, the district administration has directed people to contact the Union Parishad Chairman, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer, or the control room of the district commissioner’s office.
Rashid urged everyone to stay alert and help everyone get to safety to reduce the risk of damage. On Sunday, the Cox’s Bazar district administration made several preparations to deal with Cyclone Sitrang.
