In a significant escalation of their sprawling investigation into the 2021 attack on the US Capitol, lawmakers subpoenaed former President Donald Trump to testify on his involvement in the violence on Friday.
The summons followed a unanimous vote last week by a House panel of seven Democrats and two Republicans to compel Trump’s appearance before investigators.
It calls for the 76-year-old Republican to turn over documents by November 4 and to appear for a deposition beginning on or around November 14 – the Monday following the crucial midterm elections on November 8.
“As demonstrated in our hearings, we have gathered overwhelming evidence, including from dozens of your former appointees and staff, that you orchestrated and oversaw a multi-pronged effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election and obstruct the peaceful transfer of power,” the committee wrote to Trump.

The letter accuses Trump of attempting to overturn the election despite knowing that allegations of fraud had been rejected by more than 60 courts and refuted by his campaign staff and senior advisers.
