Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu created history by becoming the first ever tribal leader to be elected as the President of India on Thursday. She has achieved her victory in the presidential election after defeating opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha by a huge polling margin of over 53% votes by the end of third round itself.
She will be the first tribal leader to be elected as President after independence and is also the youngest member to occupy the post. She is also the second woman to become President after Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
Smt. Droupadi Murmu won by an overwhelming margin against Mr. Yashwant Sinha after obtaining over 64 per cent valid votes in a day long process of counting of ballots of Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly who form the electrol college, to succeed Ram Nath Govind and take over as the 15 th president of the country.
After the completion of the counting process which took more 10 hours, returning officer P C Mody declared Smt. Droupadi Murmu as the winner and said that she had obtained 6,76,803 votes in counter to Mr. Yashwant Sinha’s 3,80,177 votes.
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi visited the residence of Smt. Droupadi Murmu in order to congratulate her over her victory. PM also congratulated her on Twitter via his post that read,” Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has been an outstanding MLA and Minister. She had an excellent tenure as Jharkhand Governor. I am certain she will be an outstanding President who will lead from the front and strengthen India’s development journey”.
