Irvine Councilwoman Farrah N. Khan is running for Irvine Mayor this November 3, 2020. As someone who received the highest votes in the 2018 election, energizing the South Asian community, she became the first South Asian/API woman to be elected to the Irvine City Council.
She has worked hard in her first term on the Council, continuing to involve the community keeping her promise to put Irvine residents first. She has truly been a representative of the community, who is easily accessible and works on behalf of the public.
On June 15th, after facing many difficult challenges from the current leadership, she decided to run for Mayor. She stated that, “We have leadership that is not in touch with the community and their needs. As we come out of this pandemic and economic crisis, we need leadership that not only looks for innovative ways to cut costs and build revenue, we need someone that actually understands new advances in technology and how they can help us. Leadership that understands the diversity of our community and the strength that derives from it. We need leadership that will bring the community together and build bridges where needed, rather than block people and divide the community.”
Since taking office, Councilwoman Khan has initiated a ban on smoking in public places, initiated the Climate Action Plan, fought to keep funding for Irvine public schools, pushed to provide $2 million in rent relief for residents during the pandemic, initiated the Community Choice Energy program, held over 15 round table discussions on matters important to the public, and initiated and passed several resolutions in support of the diverse community members.
She is endorsed by Congresswoman Katie Porter, Assemblywoman Cottie Petri Norris, two former Mayors of Irvine Beth Krom and Sukhee Kang. Councilwoman Khan is also endorsed by Women in Leadership, the National Women’s Political Caucus of OC and WAVE (Women for American Values and Ethics), the OC League of Conservation Voters, among many others.
Her commitment to placing residents first is what she has based her decisions on as a Councilmember. And has committed to keeping the Council a place of respect, honesty and integrity, by working with all her Council colleagues, compromising where necessary to do what’s best for the community. Her votes are a testament to the work She has done to keep our city fiscally sound, to keep our commitment to public education funding, to creating a Climate Action Plan to keep our city environmentally sustainable for years to come and to standing up for our communities when they need us to.
She believes in inclusivity, leading with a vision and being an actual public servant. Her vision for the next 2 years will be focused on:
- Supporting residents and small businesses through this pandemic and keeping the community safe & healthy
- Addressing the economic uncertainty being faced and finding solutions to maintain staff and services to keep the city safe
- Working towards initiating new technology and resources to cut costs and generate additional revenue, such as the Community Choice Energy program.
- And being the community’s voice, a true representative of the public
