Heavy rains hit Bengaluru, flooding many roads and causing car damage.

Heavy rain lashed Bengaluru on Wednesday evening, flooding several arterial roads in the city’s east, south, and central areas, including the IT district of Bellandur. According to the Meteorological Department, 59 mm of rain fell in Rajamahal Guttahalli in the city’s northern outskirts. The weather service has issued a yellow alert, indicating that heavy rain will continue for the next three days.

Low-lying areas’ roads were heavily waterlogged, with water flowing into open manholes, flooded basement parking lots, and damaged vehicles. Rain began around 7.30 p.m., forcing office workers to seek shelter at metro stations on their way home.

The heavy rain caused a wall near Majestic to collapse, damaging several four-wheelers parked on the road.

Last month, the city experienced unprecedented floods due to three consecutive days of rain, sparking a political dispute between the ruling BJP and the Congress.

Parts of the city, including global IT firms and home-grown start-ups, were submerged in water that took days to recede. Roads in nearby residential areas were closed, and water and power lines were severed. Tractors were used to rescue residents from some of the posh housing colonies.

Flight operations were disrupted, and dramatic videos of rescues, flooded streets and houses, and submerged expensive cars circulated on social media.

This year’s heavy rains have broken all previous records in the IT capital, with 1706 mm recorded since the monsoon began. The city received 1,696 mm of rain in 2017.
