North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has made his first public appearance with his young daughter, confirming long-rumored reports of her existence.
On Friday, the girl considered Kim Chu-ae, joined him at an inspection of the country’s largest intercontinental ballistic missile launch.
During the test we condemned, the pair stood hand in hand.
Mr. Kim is the leader of one of the world’s most secretive countries, and little is known about his personal life.
KCNA, North Korea’s state news agency, published several photos of the two holding hands while they chat, speak with officials, inspect missiles, and watch the launch from a viewing deck.
According to Michael Madden, a North Korean expert at the Stimson Center in Washington DC, Chu-public ae’s appearance is significant.
Mr. Kim, who is the third generation in his family to lead North Korea, is demonstrating to the country’s elites that he still has a firm grip on power, Mr. Madden told the BBC.
He speculated that it could be Mr. Kim’s way of demonstrating “that the fourth generation of power succession will come through my [blood]line.”
Mr. Madden explained that it came after reports that “there was some conflict between [Mr. Kim] and other elite cohorts in 2021.”
Mr. Kim’s message was, “If you challenge me, you’re going to go down.”
