Munawar Faruqui, a comedian, said on Sunday that he would be calling it quits after 12 of his concerts were cancelled in the last two months, the most recent in Bengaluru. The performance in Bengaluru was supposed to take place on Sunday, but it was cancelled after the police advised the organisers to cancel it due to possible law and order issues.
According to India Today, the police have received threats and credible information that the show could cause “chaos and disturb public peace and harmony, perhaps leading to law and order issues.” Faruqui stated in a Twitter message following the cancellation of the show that the cancelled show was a charity event held in memory of Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar.
“Month back, my team called Late Puneeth Rajkumar sir organisation for charity which we will be going to generate from this show in Bangalore! We agreed to not sell the show in the name of charity as suggested by the noble organisation,” he wrote. He added in the post, “Putting me in jail for a joke I never did to cancel my show which has nothing problematic in it. This is unfair.”

Puneeth Rajkumar, a Kannada cinema star who died about a month ago after suffering a heart arrest, will be given Karnataka’s highest civilian honour, the Karnataka Ratna. Puneet Rajkumar will be the 10th individual to receive Karnataka’s highest civilian honour since its inception three decades ago, and the second from the Kannada cinema industry.
Munawar Faruqui, a stand-up comedian, was detained in Madhya Pradesh during one of his concerts in early January this year. During a show in Indore, Faruqui and four others were arrested on charges of making lewd remarks about Hindu deities and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, police reported at the time.
