The Russian security service captured an alleged ISIS “terrorist” on Monday for allegedly plotting an assault in India. The suspect is most likely from a Central Asian nation.
According to sources in the security establishment, Azamov Mashahont admitted that he had been assigned to kill a member of India’s “governing circle.”
In a video published by the Russian Federal Security Service, or FSB, he is allegedly heard claiming that he intended to exact revenge for an “insult to the Prophet.”
When asked if Mashahont was alluding to controversial comments by suspended BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma regarding the Prophet Muhammad during a television news debate in May, the source replied, “it is not apparent.”
The FSB said in a statement that they had “identified and detained a member of the international terrorist group Islamic State from a Central Asian nation who planned to commit a terrorist act by blowing himself up against one of the representatives of India’s ruling circles.” The group is banned in Russia.
The statement stated that “the arrested were recruited by one of the IS leaders as suicide bombers in Turkey.”
Days before the arrest, Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met in Moscow to discuss bilateral, regional, and international concerns.
During the tour, Doval met with Denis Manturov, the deputy prime minister of Russia. The two men spoke about trade and economic relations between their nations and the peaceful use of space.
