The first made-in-India light combat helicopters will be inducted into the Indian Air Force on Monday, with defense minister Rajnath Singh in attendance. The induction would give a “significant boost” to the IAF’s “combat prowess,” the defense minister said on Sunday, ahead of his travel to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, where the induction will take place.
“I will be in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, on October 3rd, to witness the induction ceremony of the first indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopters” (LCH). The addition of these helicopters will significantly improve the IAF’s combat capabilities. “I’m looking forward to it,” Rajnath Singh said in a tweet. Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, the Chief of Air Staff, will also attend.
A light combat helicopter’s features include all-weather combat capability, high altitude performance, agility, maneuverability, and extended range. These choppers, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), are believed to have armor protection, night assault capability, and crash-worthy landing gear for improved survivability.
The Indian Air Force teased these choppers on Twitter with the hashtag #AtmaNirbharBharat, which translates as “self-reliant India.”
Earlier this year, in March, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chairmanship and approved the procurement of 15 Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Limited Series Production at the cost of Rs. 3,887 Cr, coupled with infrastructure sanctions of Rs. 377 Cr.
The 5.8-tonne twin-engine helicopter, which will be inducted on Monday, has previously passed numerous weapons firing tests, according to authorities quoted by news agency PTI.
