On Friday, the Congress’ top leadership decided against holding elections for the Working Committee (CWC). The choice was made during the party’s Steering Committee meeting, and only some Gandhi family members were present.
After a three-hour meeting, the Steering Committee unanimously decided to give party president Mallikarjun Kharge the authority to propose candidates for the CWC, according to Congress communication chief Jairam Ramesh.
Many people were shocked by the ex-presidents Sonia and Rahul Gandhi’s decision to skip the meeting and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. However, the trio will be at the AICC plenary session on Saturday and Sunday.
According to sources, arguments and counterarguments regarding the CWC elections were presented at the meeting on Friday. According to Ramesh, the majority opinion was to give party chief Kharge the authority to choose the members. “The Steering Committee unanimously decided to give the Congress president the authority to propose candidates for the CWC. He said we spoke for two and a half hours on this subject.
Jairam Ramesh continued, “The decision was taken keeping in mind the political challenges facing the country, facing the Congress party in its capacity as the main Opposition and keeping in mind the far-reaching amendments that we are going to bring about in our party’s Constitution.” He said the most crucial change was to give SC, ST, OBC, minorities, women, and young people a 50% reservation in the CWC.
