Two new judges of the Indian Supreme Court were sworn in on Monday by Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.
President Droupadi Murmu has signed the Supreme Court appointment warrants for Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar.
Following a swearing-in ceremony, the new judges were officially placed in the Supreme Court on Monday at 10.30 a.m.
Kiren Rijiju, the law minister, made new appointments to the supreme court on Friday via Twitter.
Before being promoted to the Supreme Court, Justice Bindal served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, and Justice Kumar served as the Gujarat High Court Chief Justice.
After a nine-month hiatus following the oath ceremony, the top court’s strength returned to its previous level of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
Their names had been suggested for promotion to the Center by the Supreme Court Collegium on January 31.
Due to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Bindal, scheduled to leave his position in April of this year when he turns 62, will serve for three more years.
Judges of the High Court may retire at 62, while those of the Supreme Court may retire at 65.
Five judges were elevated to the Supreme Court and took their oaths as justices last week.
