Ukraine asks India to support a UN resolution on world peace.

As the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches on Friday, Kyiv has contacted Delhi to ask for its backing for a UNGA resolution highlighting the need for “lasting peace” in the nation.

Andriy Yermak, who oversees the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, requested the phone to national security adviser Ajit Doval. Less than two weeks have passed since Doval and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow.

After a special emergency session of the UNGA in the coming days, the text of the UNGA resolution, which Ukraine has drafted after consultation with allies and discussion with several nations, will be put to the vote.

It emphasizes how critical it is to achieve “a comprehensive, just and lasting peace following the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.” It urges UN members and other international organizations to help in this endeavor.

France and Germany, two European countries, have contacted India to request their support for the resolution. Despite confirming such a move on their end, French diplomatic sources predicted that India would “abstain” from the vote.

India abstained several times last year when voting on UN resolutions involving Ukraine. But when defending the votes, it has consistently emphasized respect for the UN charter, national sovereignty, and integrity.

A formal statement released by Zelenskyy’s office stated that Yermak informed Doval during the call that Ukraine is interested in the resolution receiving the broadest support possible, particularly from countries in the Global South. In January, India presented itself as the leading voice among the region’s developing and underdeveloped nations while hosting a two-day virtual summit on “Voice of the Global South.”
