Xi Jinping has asked Joe Biden to prevent Nancy Pelosi from visiting Taiwan.

During a phone call last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping asked his US counterpart Joe Biden to dissuade US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from visiting Taiwan, according to The Washington Post, citing White House officials.

However, Xi’s concerns were dismissed, and he was warned against Beijing’s “provocative” moves if the visit went through, according to the story.

According to the publication, the US President told his Chinese counterpart that he “could not oblige” since the US Congress is an independent government body and that Pelosi would make her judgments about international trips.

Biden also advised his Chinese counterpart not to take “provocative and forceful” tactics if the US House Speaker visits.

“Members of Congress have traveled to Taiwan for decades and will continue to do so in the future. Speaker Pelosi had every right to go, and her visit is in keeping with our long-standing policy of one China. “The newspaper cited National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson.

Pelosi visited Taiwan in early August. It was a US House speaker’s first visit to the island since 1997.

Pelosi was the highest-ranking US official to visit Taiwan in the previous 25 years. China protested Pelosi’s visit, which it saw as a show of support for independence, and started large-scale military maneuvers around the island.

Beijing regards Taiwan as an inalienable part of its territory and opposes official communication between the island and other countries.

Beijing has stated that the One China principle is a political underpinning of China-US relations and that violations of these obligations would jeopardize bilateral cooperation.
